Laptop Repair - What to do when it goes wrong

Like all electronics, laptops are susceptible to breaking down. The reasons can be many, but often the usual suspects are to blame. In this article we will try to help you understand what maybe wrong with your laptop and offer some suggestions on a course of action to getting a suitable laptop repair.

Common Problems

Probably the most common problem is that the laptop is dead, i.e. it wont do anything when you hit the power button. Without trying to state the obvious there are a few things to check when this happens before you go and get the laptop repaired.

Firstly, is the battery charged or the power cable plugged in correctly? Does the power socket on the wall actually have power, plug a lamp in to check if you are unsure. Sometimes a dead laptop can be just a dead power cable, check any fuse in the plug to ensure its not blown, check the cable itself to ensure there are no breaks (when its not plugged in of course).

Another cause of a dead laptop is when the power unit within the laptop itself has failed, this means of course you will need to send your laptop for repair. Other less likely causes are a dead main board within the laptop, again a case requiring you to get a professional repair on the laptop.

Other Problems Requiring a Repair

Other common problems with laptops include something that's pretty hard to describe, but involves the hard disk (where usually a repair is not possible). When hard disks fail they either do so immediately, in which case you wont be able to get past the startup screen when you turn the system on. Or they fail gradually, and this is tricky to spot.

Signs that a laptops hard disk may be failing include applications acting strangely, shutting down, freezing up, running slow etc, excessive noise from the hard disk itself indicating a physical failure, slow running of the system as a whole.

Repair of laptop hard disks is usually not possible, and it will usually require a new hard disk to be installed (and you data copied over from your old disk if its still operational). Laptop hard disk replacement is normally a job for a professional and should only be attempted by people who know what their doing when it comes to laptop repairs.

DIY Laptop Repair

Repairs of your laptop by yourself is not usually a good idea unless you are an experienced laptop technician.

It is our recommendation, unless you understand fully what your doing, and have the relevant knowledge, that you take your laptop to a professional for your laptop repair rather than attempting the repair yourself, you may well cause further damage to the laptop, not to mention the possibility of damaging yourself.
