2. Laptop Portability

Anyone who has to carry a 17 inch screen laptop weighing 3 or 4kg on a regular basis will tell you to keep it small, and with good reason. Transporting such a lump on your back in a rucksack or in a laptop bag for an extended period of time can be tiring, and unless you really need such a big laptop than something smaller is usually a better idea for your general well being!

There are some users, gamers and graphics users for example, who need to have a 17 inch screen on their laptop, and hopefully they don't need to transport it too often so it makes good sense.

If on the other hand, you are a more general user, then a smaller laptop would probably be better suited. Something that offers a 14 inch screen is usually a good compromise between portability and use.

He aint heavy, he's my laptop

Obviously, this amazing portability comes at a price, and often a substantial one.

If your laptop will never be leaving your side and you will be taking it everywhere and anywhere you go, then the portability it offers is of primary concern.

The smallest, lightest laptops can have screen sizes of only 10 inches and weigh less than 1kg, which would hardly be a stress on your muscles and bones should you need to transport it on a regular basis.

Obviously, this amazing portability comes at a price, and often a substantial one. Tiny laptops such as these can cost 2 or 3 times the cost of something with a 14 or 17 inch screen size, but for many users this is a price worth paying as the ease with which it will slip into your bag or briefcase more than makes up for the cost.

Going nowhere

At the opposite end of the users that require maximum portability, are those who need almost no level of portability at all. The purchase of a laptop for these users is mainly about room in their home and the desire to avoid having a space taking desktop PC.

In this scenario, the size and budget constraints are far less of a factor, bigger laptops are generally cheaper than smaller ones and for a desktop replacement something like a 17 inch screen is highly desirable.

Home bound laptops are often used for entertainment purposes, gaming, watching movies etc and a nice screen size is very welcome as the size and weight are of no importance to these users.

Conclusion

As with most purchases, budget is often the deciding factor. If you need portability but have a limited budget then a compromise in portability is necessary, something like a 14 inch laptop would probably be the best way to go.

If you need portability and have an unlimited budget then the laptop world is your oyster, and all the and light laptops are open to you. If you are a general user (not gaming or heavy graphics) then a 10 or 12 inch laptop offers great portability.

If you are a gamer or heavy graphics user then something bigger is probably required and you will need to balance your needs of usability with portability.
